She hosted slumber parties at which she and her classmates talked about sex, both marital and otherwise. She had a big sip of wine when Uncle Orifiss, her mama’s older brother, tied the knot for the fourth time, and another when he got married. She twice let Billy Beechum, the captain of the lacrosse team, get to second base with her when they weren’t even engaged, and her Sunday school attendance record was what the Rev. Plighwood described as “spotty”.

She married young (19), to D. Griecer Phlagstone. A lot of her friends thought it was D’s being a poultry billionaire that made Shan love him, but Shan swore on a stack of Bibles that she hadn’t had any idea who he was the afternoon his chauffeur rushed into the Dairy Queen to ask if he cold use the little boys’ room — urgently! — and that it was his sense of humor that she fell in love with.

Having been 81 at the time of their wedding, Mr. Phlagstone enjoyed only 11 months of marital bliss with his young bride before he bought the farm, mortality-wise. After a period of mourning overseen by Rev. Plighwood, which she also did in the afternoon and evening, Shan met future second hubby Duphiss (better known as Booper) Convoy at a church gun show. Impressed by his having to wear a shirt and tie for his job as an assistant root vegetable manager at the local Foodmart, and by his devotion to Jesus, she accepted his proposal of marriage on the condition that he make all the hard decisions and earn all the money. She, in turn, would present him with five beautiful Christian children (four boys and a tomboy), and keep their home spotless, and wear special attire on nights when he was feeling a little frisky.

With Jesus’s help, Shan hopes to become a much better player before next year’s Mom-and-Kids badminton tournament at church.

After the birth of their fifth child, Shan asked Duphiss (whom everyone called Booper) if it would be all right for her to do a podcast in which she, as a Christian, would comment on current affairs. Some of the other ladies at church thought podcasting would invalidate Shan’s claims to being a tradwife, but if they were so smart, why did her famous Christian Cookies never fail to outsell their cakes and banana bread and what have you at the big biannual bake sale in the church parking lot? She kept right on baring her soul, and you and me are the richer for it.

In a few days, if you’re nice, I will publish details of how you, if you’re a decent Christian who believes that all life is sacred except for those who would swarm across the border to vote for Democrats and get our beautiful young people “hooked” on fentanyl, can subscribe to Shan’s podcast.
